Natural Horsemanship and English Saddles
Natural horsemanship training is the art of working, training and riding horses by appealing to their instincts and herd mentality. It’s a manner which works with the horse’s behavior, instincts and personality in an easy and kind manner.
It involves communication techniques in order to build a partnership that closely resembles the relationships that exist between horses. Natural riding horsemanship is manner in which you train your horse without any type of force. Whether you are just starting to train or you have been a trainer for many years you can still learn natural riding horsemanship. The purpose of this type of training is to create an environment of trust and companionship between horse and human. Horses have high threat assessment levels and are quick in taking defensive. They can create a strong emotional bond with humans if they are treated with respect and understanding.
When training a young horse the basic technique is to apply a pressure of some kind to the horse as a “cue” for an action and then release the pressure as soon as the horse responds. If you are wanting to train a horse with natural horsemanship and English saddles it is recommended that you start them out with a western saddle since an English saddle is lighter in weight than a western saddle.
It is very important that the saddle fits the rider. If the saddle is designed poorly or doesn’t properly fit it will throw off the rider’s balance by pushing them backwards or behind the horse’s center of balance. It can also lead to incorrect form as a way to compensate for a lack of balance in the saddle. So how do you know which is the best fitting saddle for you? English saddles come in standard sizes for adult riders ranging from 16 1/2 to 18 inches and youth English saddles are generally 16 1/2 and under. However, some teens and small adults can use a 16 1/2 as well.

There can be 1/4″ difference between saddles of different brands with the same size designation so, make sure you take the time to find one that best fits you.

While there are many other styles of saddle available that can be used for English riding, these are the most common. Take your time and choose a saddle that not only fits your discipline, but also is comfortable and fits your horse.

I’m sure there are some threads like this, but I couldn’t find any. This summer I plan on getting an English saddle, just for pleasure riding.
